In Kenya’s often misunderstood auctioneering profession, success requires more than legal knowledge and enforcement authority.
It demands integrity, emotional intelligence, resilience and a deep commitment to justice.
Few professionals embody these qualities better than Muganda Otieno, an associate at Keysian Auctioneers, one of the country's most respected auctioneering firms.
Otieno's journey into the profession was not accidental. It was shaped by family influence, early exposure and a passion for a field that plays a critical role in the administration of justice and debt recovery.
His educational journey began at Agoro Sare National School before proceeding to Bugema College in Uganda for his A-Level studies.
He later pursued a diploma in business administration at the Nairobi Institute of Business Studies. Recognising the need for continuous professional development, Otieno has undertaken several specialised short courses to strengthen his expertise.
Today, he is a certified and trained professional mediator through the Mediation International Training Institute and a member of the International Institute of Chartered Arbitrators and Conciliators, qualifications that have equipped him with valuable skills in dispute resolution and conflict management.
"Continuous learning has always been important to me because the legal environment is constantly evolving," Otieno says.
“To remain effective and relevant, one must keep improving their knowledge and skills.”
His connection to auctioneering started long before his professional career. Growing up, he spent many school holidays working at his father’s firm, gaining firsthand experience of the industry’s operations.
His father, Muganda Wasulwa, founded Keysian Auctioneers in 1998 and built the company into a respected brand in Kenya's legal and debt recovery sectors. Watching his father navigate the profession left a lasting impression on the young Otieno.
"My father, who is an auctioneer, is my greatest inspiration. During school holidays, I worked in the firm and gained first-hand exposure to the profession," he explains.
“That experience allowed me to understand its importance in the administration of justice and debt recovery and ultimately inspired me to pursue it as a career.”
Beyond the family business, Otieno also gained valuable legal exposure while working for nearly a year at Morara Ngisa and Company Advocates during his college years.
The experience provided him with a broader understanding of legal processes and strengthened his appreciation of the auctioneer's role in Kenya's justice system.
While auctioneering remains a demanding profession, Otieno says his early exposure prepared him for the realities of the job.
"My motivation came from witnessing the discipline, professionalism and resilience required to succeed in this field," he says.
“Over time, I developed a deep appreciation for the role auctioneers play in supporting commerce, dispute resolution and the enforcement of lawful processes.”
Today, Keysian Auctioneers stands among the country's recognised firms in the industry. Otieno says the firm's success is rooted in the strong foundation laid by its founder and the collective efforts of its team.
“My role has been to build on that foundation by strengthening client relationships, improving efficiency, embracing professionalism and adapting to changing industry demands,” he said.
“The firm's success is a result of teamwork, consistency and the values established over the years.”
Despite the firm's achievements, Otieno acknowledges that auctioneering comes with significant challenges.
One of the most difficult aspects of the profession is dealing with emotionally charged situations involving individuals and businesses facing financial hardship.
"Many people only see the enforcement side of auctioneering. They do not always understand the legal processes behind our work," he says.
“We often handle situations involving emotional and financial distress, which requires patience, professionalism and empathy.”
Other challenges include security risks during field operations, economic fluctuations that affect debt recovery and the delicate responsibility of balancing creditors' interests, while protecting the rights and dignity of debtors.
As one of the team leaders at Keysian Auctioneers, Otieno believes leadership is most effective when it is collaborative.
"We emphasise collective responsibility, open communication and mutual respect," he said.
“Every team member has a role to play, and together we work towards common goals, while maintaining high professional standards.”
Professionalism and ethical conduct remain central pillars of the firm's operations. Otieno says trust is the foundation upon which successful auctioneering is built.
"We strictly adhere to the law, industry regulations and professional codes of conduct," he said.
“Transparency, accountability and integrity guide every process we undertake. Without trust, no auctioneering firm can survive.”
Handling sensitive cases requires a careful balance between executing legal mandates and respecting human dignity.
Otieno says Keysian approaches every assignment with professionalism, confidentiality and fairness.
"Many matters involve significant emotional and financial challenges," he said.
“We, therefore, communicate clearly, follow legal procedures diligently and ensure that all parties are treated with respect and dignity.”
These values have helped the firm maintain long-term relationships with clients in an increasingly competitive environment.
"Our relationship with clients is built on integrity, professionalism, accountability, reliability and mutual respect," he said.
“Consistency in service delivery is what earns loyalty and trust over time.”
Away from work, Otieno is a devoted family man and father of two children, a son and a daughter.
He says balancing the demands of a challenging profession with family life requires discipline and effective time management.
"I prioritise tasks, delegate where necessary and make deliberate efforts to create time for my family and personal well-being," he said.
“Having a supportive family and a capable team makes it easier to maintain that balance.”
Looking ahead, Otieno envisions Keysian Auctioneers growing into one of the most respected and trusted firms not only in Kenya but also across the region.
"Our long-term vision is to strengthen professionalism, embrace technology, expand our service offerings and maintain the highest standards of integrity and efficiency," he said.
“Most importantly, we want to continue building lasting relationships with our clients and contribute positively to the development of the auctioneering profession.”
