A total of 78 parties presented candidates for elections last year out of the total 90, Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu has said.
Nderitu said the number was the second highest in the country's history after 2007 when 117 parties presented candidates.
"The number went down after 2007 when the law was reviewed and compliance enforced," she said.
She said the parties presented some 11,000 candidates out of the total of 16,000 during last year's polls.
"I am proud of the parties which presented candidates," she stated.
Nderitu spoke at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi during the launch of the 2022 Post-Election Evaluation Report.
"The report is about what worked, what did not work and lessons for the future," Nderitu said.
She said there was improved participation of women and the youth in the 2022 polls.
"We are not where we want to be. Democracy is a journey and we are growing every day," she added.
Nderitu said everything worked according to plan in last year's elections.
"Our system worked well. We had one or two down times which is normal," she added.
Present at the launch were Attorney General Justin Muturi, officials of various parties, IEBC, Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly,
Others were Political Parties Liaison Committee, Political Parties Dispute Tribunal, Inter-Religious Council and National Cohesion and Integration Commission.
