The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has expressed shock following the death of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was shot by a gunman along Ngong Road in Nairobi on Wednesday evening.

In a statement issued shortly after the incident, the party confirmed that Hon. Were had spent most of the day in Parliament and left at 6:15 p.m. after participating in the day’s business.

“We have received with shock and disbelief the tragic death of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were–MP Kasipul at the hands of a gunman,” the statement read.

ODM condoled with the family, constituents, and the people of Homa Bay.

“While we join his constituents, the people of the great County of Homa Bay, his family, colleagues and friends in mourning, we call on the police to investigate the shooting incident and bring the culprits to book,” the party said.

The party also announced plans to issue a comprehensive statement at a later date.

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, who was with the deceased in Parliament, said Were left shortly before his death.

“We were with him today in Parliament the whole afternoon. He left barely 30 minutes before he met his death,” Junet said.

He called for a speedy investigation into the incident.

“We would like to ask the police to investigate this matter thoroughly and share with Kenyans as fast as possible what happened to Hon. Were,” he added.

Were was shot dead on Wednesday night along Ngong Road near City Mortuary. Police believe the killing was targeted and predetermined.

The National Police Service said the fatal shooting of Ong’ondo Were appears to have been both “targeted and predetermined,” raising alarm over the motive behind the brazen attack on a sitting legislator.
