Mabanga Girls dormitory burnt, all students safe

School principal said the matter was reported at Nalondo police station and is being investigated.

A dormitory at St Christopher's Mabanga Girls High School in Luuhya/ Bwake ward in Kabuchai, Bungoma, was Wednesday evening burnt, and property of unknown value destroyed.

The dormitory housed 300 students. No student was injured.

Luuya/Bwake MCA Edwin Opwora condemned the incident.

Opwora said he received a call from the school informing him that the school was on fire.

The MCA called on Governor Ken Lusaka to work towards ensuring that, Bungoma gets firefighting machines that will be available and hotlines that can help institutions during the time of crisis.

The school principal, who said she was not authorised to speak to the media and declined to be named, said the matter was reported at Nalondo police station and was being investigated.

“I am also expecting to have a meeting with the board of management to find the way forward,” she said.

Opwora called on leaders led by Lusaka to intervene and support the school to get new mattresses, uniforms, boxes and blankets as students are currently stranded.

“Students lost everything, we need support for them to continue learning,” he said.
