The European Union, the UK
high commission, the US Embassy
and the United Nations resident
coordinator have reaffirmed
their commitment to promoting
prosperity, security and stability in
NEP region.
Speaking to the press after a meeting with Garissa Governor Nathif Jama at his office, the delegation, led by Stephen Jackson, the United Nations resident coordinator, said the five partners came together and want to work closely with both the national and county governments to exploit the full potential of the Northeastern region. He acknowledged that the region has enormous potential that remained untapped.
During the engagement which saw the delegation hold meetings with the regional and county security teams as well as the assembly, they emphasised their shared commitment to addressing poverty and insecurity.
“As partners, we remain committed to strengthening cooperation and to continue working closely with the Government of Kenya, at national and county level, to address the security and development challenges of Kenya’s North-East region and its borderlands,” Jackson said.
“We’re working to help Kenya unlock the region’s potential and make sure no one is left behind.” He added, “This is a zone of enormous potential. Whether one is thinking of livestock, arable agriculture, value chain, renewable energy and many more. There is so much potential that can be realised in the North East.”
He said between 2017 and 2025, the five partners had collectively invested Sh188 billion, adding that going forward, they want to see how they can maximise the potential of that kind of support.
Jama thanked the UN agencies and the development partners for their continuous support in different aspects noting that as a county, they don’t take it for granted.
