
The government has set aside Sh4.7 billion for
electrification projects in the 5 coastal counties of Kenya.
Speaking in Boyani, one village, Rabai constituency, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said that of the money set aside, Sh1.9 billion will be used for electrifying Kilifi County.
He spoke when he launched an electrification project, which
is being implemented by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy
Corporation (REREC).
“The launch of the Boyani Project, which will see 172 households electrified, is just the beginning of good tidings for Rabai Constituency,” he said.
The project is being implemented through the matching fund, where the area MP, Anthony Kenga Mpe, through the NG-CDF, contributes Sh5 million and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation matched the funds and added another Sh2 million in order to make the project a success.
The MP further intimated that the constituency was still in
dire need of electrification.
He said that there are 220 areas in the constituency which
are in need of electrification
CS Wandayi said that he will be in Rabai for two days to oversee electrification projects in the constituency.
Kilifi County Deputy Governor Flora Mbetsa, who attended the
ceremony, said that the county government had set aside Sh30 million for rural
electrification with REREC expected to match the funds, in Order to implement
electrification projects in the area.
She thanked President Ruto for remembering the people of
Kilifi through the electrification projects.
Local residents, including John Khamisi, said that the
project was a major breakthrough, since they had lived for many years without
electricity.
