The National Police Service (NPS) says that they have recovered at least 2,658 bullets in Laikipia county.

The recovery according to NPS followed an intelligence-led operation in the county.

The recovery was made in Minjore area, in Kirima sub-county.

NPS in a statement on Thursday said the owners of the ammunition, who are a couple were also arrested during the raid.

"Police in Laikipia yesterday April 17, 2024 nabbed 2, 658 rounds of ammunition within Minjore area, Kirima Sub-County.

"The National Police Service thanks the public for the success of this intelligence-led operation," the police said.

This comes even as the country steps up efforts to recover illegal guns owned by bandits in bandit-prone areas.

Laikipia is one of the counties marred by banditry and livestock rustling in Kenya.

Last week, detectives recovered a firearm alleged to have been robbed from an OCS in Vihiga in Kasarani.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the officer in charge of Vihiga police station was on patrol on December 21, 2023, when he was attacked by a gang and his firearm stolen.

The gang allegedly ambushed the OCS while he was parking his car in Vihiga's Majengo market.

They attacked him with daggers and left him for dead.

The gang is said to have disappeared with his Jericho pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.
