Former Director General of the National Museum of Kenya Mzalendo Kibunjia and three other suspects will be arraigned in court on Tuesday over alleged Sh490m payment to ghost workers.

Kibunjia was arrested on Monday by EACC detectives alongside an ICT officer and accountant and one more suspect.

The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission expects the suspects to be arraigned before the Milimani Law courts after spending a night at Integrity Centre Police Station.

“The four suspects are to be charged with mismanagement of Sh490,000,000 at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) between Financial Years 2015-16 and 2021-22,” EACC alleged on Monday after the arrests.

They are alleged to have mismanaged public funds through irregular payments of salaries to ghost workers, who were later transferred to senior officials.

“Upon conclusion of investigations, the commission submitted the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions who concurred with the commission’s recommendations to charge the suspects,’’ EACC Deputy Director for Corporate Affairs Eric Ngumbi told journalists in Nakuru on Monday.

The EACC detectives commenced investigations after they received a report that the NMK officials were allegedly mismanaging public funds through irregular payment of salaries.

The suspects will face various counts including alleged conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property and acquisition of proceeds of crime and money laundering.

The EACC said one of the alleged suspects who was the director of human resources and administration was yet to be arrested.
