Motorists stuck in traffic jam on flooded Machakos roads

Hundreds of motorists were Monday evening stuck in traffic snarl-ups occassioned by flooding on major roads within Machakos County.

It followed heavy downpour the better part of the day as witnessed in most parts of the country which continue to experience enhanced rains.

On the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, motorists were caught unawares after they found parts of the road flooded.

The stretch between Mto Wa Mawe and Makutano-Machakos Town turnoff was flooded with motorists being forced to use only the Mombasa-Nairobi lane.

Machakos County police commander Patrick Lobolia confirmed that there was flooding on the highway.

"There was flooding along the said road. We went there, but it didn't take more than 30 minutes before the water subsided," Lobolia told the Star by phone on Monday.

Athi River East subcounty police commander Anderson Mbae said they were monitoring the situation across the subcounty.

The situation was the same along Machakos-Kyumbi road with motorists stuck and passengers stranded.

Vehicles manoeuvered the flooded road as rains continued to pound.

Mto Wa Mawe Bridge located near Green Park Gardens is also overflown after the river burst its banks.

Tens of people were forced to walk long distances after they failed to get public service vehicles owing to the fact that majority of operators had avoided the road.

The incident happened hours after 82 homesteads were swept by floods in Katelembo area within Machakos town subcounty Sunday night.

Thirty five other homes were also swept away by floods in the neighbouring Katheka Kai area the same night.

Elsewhere in Kawethei village in Kangundo subcounty, tens of residents were rendered homeless after floods swept their homes.

Majority of the victims have since sought refuge in friends' and relatives' homes.
