Police detonate abandoned bomb found on a farm in Laikipia

Police have successfully detonated a live bomb that was found on a farm where farmers were tilling in the Sipili area, Laikipia county.

The discovery was made on March 9 at Wangwachi area, police said.

Farmers at a farm reported that there was an explosive device on their land.

Police rushed to the scene and established that it was a 60 mm live bomb.

Due to the security nature of the place police managed to move it to Sipili police station awaiting detonation.

Bomb disposal experts visited the station and managed to detonate it.

The bomb is believed to have originated from one of the security agencies operating in the area.

The security officers said the explosive could have caused much damage and deaths had it been mishandled.

Police and military stage operations and drills in the area and it is suspected the bomb originated from them.

Elsewhere tragedy struck Shimbo Secondary School in Wundanyi on Saturday when a Form Three student drowned while swimming at the Kishenyi dam in Taita Taveta.

However, after hours-long underwater search by local divers the body was found on Sunday.

According to some eyewitnesses, the deceased was heard calling for help after being overwhelmed by the water.

Police said the 17-year-old student had gone to swim in the company of his fellow students when he drowned.

According to officials, the students had just finished attending their afternoon classes when they decided to go to the dam.

Authorities were informed of the incident and launched investigations into the same.

Local divers and police officers from Wundanyi police station camped at the dam mapping the area of the incident before beginning the search.

Elsewhere in Embali, Vihiga County, the body of a 25-year-old woman was found in a stream after suspected drowning.

The body was found on Mulianya long after the woman had drowned on Saturday evening.

Police said they are investigating the incident to establish if it was drowning or the woman was killed and the body dumped in the stream.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.

Meanwhile, a man was crushed and killed while retrieving potatoes from under a truck along Tipis – Olbaoi road on Saturday, in Mau Narok, Nakuru.

Police said the lorry was parked at the spot as the loaders offloaded potatoes before it returned to the farm.

It was then that Joseph Kang’ethe the deceased went to retrieve some hidden potatoes in a sack at the back of the truck to load the same.

Some of the potatoes had spilt under the lorry.

Police said the driver of the truck unknowingly backed up the truck and ran over Kang’ethe.

Kang’ethe was rushed to Mau Narok Health Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body of the deceased was taken to Egerton University's mortuary pending postmortem and the truck was detained at the Njoro police station yard awaiting inspection.
