Cleric criticises Marriage Bill

Wednesday, November 14, 2012 - 00:00 -- BY WAMBUGU KANYI

THE head of the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Kenya Archbishop John Baptista Mugecha has criticised the Marriage Bill that was approved by the Cabinet last week.

The archbishop said in Nyeri yesterday some provisions in the bill are against the Biblical teachings, noting that it is violating some aspects of human rights.

“Some individuals will take advantage of the bill and get into marriage relationships casually and perhaps with ill intentions,” said Mugecha.

He said the church advocates and respects the holy matrimony, which is a decision by two partners in accordance with the teachings of the Bible, arguing that cohabiting is not a formal relationship and should not be considered as a marriage.
