URP presidential hopeful William Ruto has pledged to set up a special fund for Coast to address the economic marginalisation of the region if elected president.
Ruto said the fund, similar to CDF, will be distributed to all the constituencies in the region and shall be used for economic mainstreaming.
Addressing his supporters during a rally in Kilifi town at the weekend, Ruto said the region has been marginalised for long. He said the fund will help the region grow to the same level as other economic regions in the country. “The first step in improving the economic status of a country is to improve the economic status of the communities.
“In this regard when I am sworn in as the president I will make sure that the economic status of our communities is uplifted and the Coast region shall be a special case because it has been marginalized for a very long time,” he said.
He further noted that the region is full of natural resources that could drive forward the economy of the country but a deliberate move by the previous governments rendered the area poor.
However, the presidential hopeful said his government will make sure every civic ward shall have a technical college or a polytechnic so that the youths can get skills to drive the country’s economy.
“It is very sad to note that the whole of Kilifi county does not have a public tertiary college. This is challenging as you may lack the needed human resource to drive this county,” said Ruto.
Ruto further challenged the public to elect leaders who match what they say with what they do if they want the country to move a step further from where it is. Ruto was in a tour of the province for his presidential campaigns bid.
