East African Breweries is the best company to work for, according to a survey conducted by audit and consultancy firm Deloitte East Africa.

The survey sampled 16 companies in Kenya based on a criteria that involved employee interviews. The announcement was made at  the Best Company to Work For Awards 2012 ceremony, where Kenya Women Finance Trust and Nation Media Group were placed second and third.

Other companies that scored well in the survey are British American Tobacco, Old Mutual, Pan Africa Life and Total Kenya.

This was the inaugural survey for Kenya although it has been conducted for the last ten years in South Africa. “We intend to conduct a sector by sector survey and overall ratings as companies start appreciating the need for such evaluation to improve their own organizations,” said Deloitte Chief Executive Jane Karuku.

The awards recognised organisations that obtained the highest scores in the survey as rated by their employees as well as other organisational attributes.

She said the survey was launched in response to the need to understand the motivators and expectations of employees.

“The survey found out that the biggest motivators for employees is not how much they earn but how appreciated they in the organization structure, which also boost productivity among them,” Said Karuku

According to the survey, most companies start loosing personal touch with employees as soon as the staff numbers hit 150, and with it the confidence of employees in their employer start waning.

“This may stir the talented employees desire to seek new opportunities where they feel part of the core team running the companies rather just workers” said David Conradie, Director Deloitte Consulting South Africa.
