A swimming spree by a group of primary school children turned tragic after one of them was killed by a crocodile on Thursday evening. Kennedy Ogaka, 12, a standard five pupil at Ogaka Primary School in Mikei and three of his friends went to swim at River Migori to celebrate the onset of school holidays. His friends said he swam further into the river, which is infested by crocodiles and hippos, before the animal attacked him as they tried to swim to safety.

Wananchi, who responded to the children’s distress call, chased the crocodile downstream and scared it away by throwing stones and sticks at it. They retrieved the child’s body from the river on Friday morning after a night search. “We call on KWS to try and control the animal's population and compensate the family,” said Alan Olingo, a resident. OCPD Richard Bitonga confirmed the incident and said the body was taken to Migori Level Four Hospital.
