Tuesday, November 15, 2011 - 00:00 -- BY JAVED KANA

The Young Women’s Islamic Society and the Muslim Women’s Association hosted
an Eid dinner last Saturday evening to celebrate festive occasion and to
bring together the community. Members and guests were treated to a variety of
entertaining programs like the live band performance by Vickie and his group,
DJ Hussein’s sensational mixes to keep the young ones tapping their foot as
well as cultural dance items including a vibrant traditional Punjabi martial
arts display.

The chairlady of the Muslim Women’s Association, who is also
a popular presenter at East FM – Parveen Adam, highlighted various activities
carried out by the club including giving medical aid, paying school fees and
donating to other charities. She also acknowledged the efforts of two of the
community’s women, the late Qamar Jehan and Azmat Mir, for their tireless efforts in
promoting the women’s club. In a fund-raiser that was the crux of the programme
that evening, Parveen thanked various donors and also urged more people to
donate generously towards their medical aid project. A wide and sumptuous palate of vegetarian and non-vegetarian
delicacies was served at dinner.

PS: At the gathering, yours truly was awarded a certificate of
appreciation for the ‘outstanding service to Muslim community.’ This comes in
recognition of the Ramadhan programmes that I help set up and other features that
I produce during Ramadhan. It was an unexpected yet humbling moment and a
recognition that I truly cherish. Thank you.

Aleem’s Angels, Seema’s Quickgun Murugans, Ruhila’s
Chandigarh Di Stars, Sonu’s Sensational Sizzlers, Allaudin’s Rangeele Rasoiye,
Parveen’s Tandoorkar Blasters, Kunjan’s Raw Ten Rotliz and a special East FM
listeners’ team battled with each other in a fierce Koroga challenge at the
Mystique Gardens, Nairobi, last Friday night, as East FM churned out another sizzling
on-ground activation.

Sponsored by Pearl Rice, the Koroga Premiere League has 14 Koroga teams spear-headed by each of East FM’s presenters who will
compete with each other every week to find the ultimate Koroga champion (team).
This comes with a cash prize of Sh100,000! Out of the eight teams that participated in the first round,
Seema’s Quickgun Murugans, Ruhila’s Chandigarh Di Stars, Parveen’s Tandoorkar
Blasters and Kunjan’s Raw Ten Rotliz qualified for the semi-finals round.

Also, there was a special award, the Asian Scene’s ‘Scene-Stealer’
award for a team which stole the thunder from the rest of the participating
teams; that award went to Seema’s Quickgun Murugans. Next week, I am told, will
be even more exciting!

The Prime Bank Biashara branch’s staff and close friends of
Riya Sharma threw in a surprise birthday bash for the banker and radio
presenter who turned a year older on 11.11.11. Organised by Bharti Ratna, who
glamorously calls herself Camilla, the bash brought tears of joy to Riya who
had no idea about the surprise. The friends sang for a stunned Riya and had a
great time together. It was an unexpected yet humbling moment and a recognition that I truly
cherish. Thank you.
