Mwandawiro SDP faction demonstrates at registrar’s office

THE Social Democratic Party faction of Mwandawiro Mgangha yesterday stormed the registrar of political party’s office on the 21st floor of Anniversary towers and staged a sit in. The group was protesting what they termed as the registrar’s wrong interpretation of the ruling that was delivered last year by the Political Party’s Tribunal.

Last month, the registrar of political parties Lucy Ndungu clarified that the officials of the Social Democratic Party remain the same and that there was no change of officials as earlier reported in a section of the media. Late last year, a section of the media reported that members of SDP won a case which they had filed before the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal compelling the registrar to nullify the appointment of Mutahi Kagwe,  Mutua Katuku  and Peter Ndwiga as officials of the party.

The complainants, Benedict Wachira and Booker Ngesa argued before the tribunal that Mutahi Kagwe had hijacked the party and that they were not properly appointed as officials of SDP. “We want the ruling to be applied. The registrar should remove all those people from the official’s list,” Benedict Wachira who was one of the demonstrators said.

The demonstrators paralysed operations at Anniversary towers before police moved in to disperse them with tear gas. However, SDP's secretary general Mutahi Kagwe said he has resigned as the party’s secretary general. He is associated with the newly formed Party of Action led by Raphael Tuju. Kagwe was present during the launch of the Party of Action.
