Girl quits school over the hijab

Thursday, February 6, 2014 - 00:00 -- ALLOYS MUSYOKA

Kinango A standard eight pupil at Vigurungani primary has dropped out of school after she was barred from wearing the hijab. In a letter to the school’s management, Fatuma Mbeyu said her constitutional right to cover her head and body has been violated.

Kinango subcounty education officer Ruth Mutisya said investigations are ongoing on the incident. She said she suspects the girl has been brainwashed as she has been wearing her school uniform since standard one.

Kinango Knut secretary Simeon Nyundo said religious leaders should intervene and counsel Mbeyu to enable her go back to school and complete her studies.
