POLICE in Mombasa are investigating the murder of a Redeemed Gospel Church pastor who was shot dead on Saturday night.

Pastor Charles Mathole, 41, was shot in the church at Mtopanga estate in Kisauni.

Preliminary investigations indicate he was shot on the head from behind by assailants who escaped without stealing anything.

Kisauni police boss Joseph Kioko said police have launched investigations.

The assailants, who shot him from behind, did not steal anything.

A cartridge fired from a pistol was recovered from the scene.

Police said the attackers are well trained hit-men who could have trailed him from his home.

“We have interrogated a few people. However, the information still remains scanty,” said Kariuki.

He said they are questioning the night guard and church attendants who were present during the 11pm incident.

They two told the media that they never heard of any gunshot .However neighbors say a gunshot was heard during the incident.

His wife claris Mathole said her husband left the house at 10 pm for prayers in preparation for Sunday services.

She said he had received death threats a few days ago and reported the matter to the police but was never resolved.

“He had received threatening death messages from unknown people. It was reported to the police but it was latter concluded that the threats were sent by fraudsters from inside prisons,” said Claris.

His brother George Kiraga said the neighbors were unhappy about the presence of the church that is situated within a residential area.

Church leaders under the umbrella of Mombasa Church Forum condemned the murder and demanded for thorough investigation.

In a statement read by Stanley Prince, a member of the forum, the leaders said the incidence was not a normal robbery.

This incident come in the wake of last month burning of Salvation Army church in Majengo area after sheikh Ibrahim Ismail and three other Muslims were shot dead by unknown assailants’.

The church is situated just a few meters from Masjid Musa that the late controversial Muslim cleric Sheikh Aboud Rogo and Ibrahim used to conduct prayers.
