Journalist gets ICC warrant
A journalist has threatened to spill the beans on investigations by the International Criminal Court.
This is after the prosecution issued a warrant of arrest against him on allegations that he is a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto.
Walter Baraza is a journalist for the People Daily based in Eldoret North.
The warrant was issued between September 17 and 18.
The ICC said Baraza has close contacts with some of the witnesses in the ongoing case against Ruto.
Baraza said an ICC investigator Paul Irani met him on September 15 and convinced him to testify against Ruto.
“They were willing to get me out of the country through Uganda on 16th,” he said.
Baraza said Irani threatened to issue him with the arrest warrant if he did not testify against Ruto.
“I have met with Irani four times in different places to discuss the issue of witnesses at the ICC,”said Baraza.
He said they first met between December 1 and 5, 2012 at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi.
“He offered to pay Sh30,000 for my taxi from Eldoret,” he said.
Irani asked Baraza to connect him to a woman linked to the Kiambaa Church fire of the 2007- 08 post-election violence.
“On September 13, the investigators called and told me to meet them at Topelli Restaurant opposite Nairobi Hospital”.
He said his lawyer has started the process to ensure he cooperates with the court. Baraza said he will not allow the investigations to destroy his career.
