'Fat' presidential escort boss moved in reshuffle

Thursday, August 15, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY STAR REPORTER

The head of the presidential escort, Wanjohi Mwangi, and his deputy have been replaced.

Wanjohi's transfer comes four months after President Uhuru expressed concerns that he is not "physically fit" for his duties, highly placed police sources who cannot be identified said.

He has been replaced by Edward Njoroge Mbugua who until recently was the Mombasa county police commander. Wanjohi has been redeployed to the firearms unit.

His deputy, Charles Kinoti Narangwi, has been replaced by Mohammed Omar Bashane, who was the third in command at the Presidential Escort Recce unit.

Narangwi is now the Nyanza police boss. It is the first such reshuffle of officers in the presidential escort team which Uhuru inherited from his predecessor Mwai Kibaki.

Wanjohi had been the team's commander for the last two years, replacing the current Nairobi County Police Commander Benson Kibue. The reshuffle is part of a redeployment of senior police officers announced by Vigilance House on Monday.

North Eastern deputy provincial police boss Noor Yarow Gabow has been appointed the chief instructor at the Kenya Police College, Kiganjo, to replace Miriam Muli.

Gabow will now be in charge of overhauling the police curriculum and improve the training of police officers who now have to be under instruction for fifteen months instead of nine months.

The Nyanza police boss Joseph ole Tito has been moved to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to head a unit that will have overall command of security at the airports while Robert Kitur has been named the new Mombasa county commander.

The Rift Valley provincial police boss Levin Mwandi is the new National Disaster Operations Centre commander. Mwandi's appointment came just days after President Uhuru ordered the harmonization of security and disaster response agencies following last week's fire at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Mwandi has been replaced in Rift Valley by Elias Oduori.

Douglas Kiricho Kanja who until recently was the General Service Unit headquarters armourer has been redeployed as the deputy Kenya Airports Police Unit commandant to replace Eunice Wangari Kihiko who has been moved to the director of reforms at Police headquarters.
