Kirinyaga County assembly has elected a woman lawyer to be the assembly speaker.Ann Wangechi Githinji a Nairobi based lawyer emerged the winner after gathering 14 votes against former Ndia MP James Kibicho who got six votes.
Wangechi beat the strong team of six candidates who had applied to be considered for the seat.The election which was conducted through secret ballot however could not produce an outright winner first round.
According to the standing order to emerge the win first round speaker elect must gunner 2/3 of the total votes. The interim county assembly clerk Stephen Nzioka had to call for a runoff between two top candidates Ann Wangechi Githinji and James Kibicho.
On first round Ann gunned twelve votes against Kibicho eight votes forcing for run off since no one could gunner 14 votes needed to emerge the outright winner.
Earlier lady justice Cecilia Gathua of Kerugoya high court spearheaded the swearing in all twenty county ward representatives from the county.
The county representative took oath of office where they vowed to protect and defend the constitution and do justice to all manner of people.
Speaking after she was sworn in the new speaker promised to be impartial while discharging her duties.She termed her election as triumph for women pointing that she was delighted by her election.
Ann aged 45 years got a major boosts after governor elect Joseph Ndathi and his deputy Julius Njiri threw weight behind her.Earlier in the day lobbying was intense with each candidate trying to lobby and convince the county reps for consideration.
