Operations around Lake Naivasha were temporarily disrupted on Tuesday after a teenager drowned while swimming with his friends.

Fear and panic gripped Karagita landing beach as local fishermen and police moved in to search for the body of the 13-year-old boy.

In the last couple of months, cases of drowning involving fishermen have been on the rise amid an influx of minors involved in the trade.

Fisherman Alex Ndichu said they were preparing their nets when they were attracted by screams near the popular landing beach.

He said it was the norm for local youths to venture into the lake for swimming, adding that the latest incident caught them by surprise.

“They were around six teenagers and we moved very fast to where they were and it took us over 30 minutes to recover the body as police moved in to collect it,” he said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, police in the town are looking for the driver of a car that hit and killed a man near Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI) in Naivasha.

The 21-year-old was walking along the road at 8pm when the car hit and killed him.

The car that sped off towards the Nairobi-Nakuru highway left some debris that the police are using in their investigations.

Witness Samuel Njung’e said the car which was being driven at high speed, veered off the road and hit the deceased.

“The driver did not stop and by the time police came in, the victim had died but there were some vehicle parts left behind,” he said.

Naivasha OCPD Benjamin Boen said the bodies were collected and taken to the mortuary and inquest files opened.
