Traffic will be interrupted for four days after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) temporarily closed a section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass.
This is to allow contractors to carry out maintenance works along that stretch.
In a notice, the authority informed motorists that the section of the road will be closed from Thursday, June 15, until Sunday, June 18.
The closure will affect the Kikuyu-bound carriageway from the virtual weighbridge to Gitaru Overpass.
However, KeNHA’s Director General, Kung'u Ndungu, announced that motorists would access the area every night from 6:00 pm to 9:00 am.
"Normal traffic will resume every night between 6:00 pm and 9:00 am. This allows highway maintenance works along the section,” he said.
Motorists have, however, been advised to approach the section with caution and to follow the traffic signs and guidance in place.
For security and direction purposes, KeNHA will deploy marshalls to control traffic at night from Thursday to Sunday.
Also, proper signs will be erected to direct motorists plying the Southern Bypass.
The Nairobi Southern Bypass project involved the construction of a 28.6km dual carriageway with 12 kilometres of slip roads and an extra 8.5 kilometres of service roads.
It was designed to allow motorists to enter the bypass from the Nairobi-Mombasa highway near Park Side Towers, drive on the edge of the Nairobi National Park, Langata South Estate, Ngong Road, Dagoretti, Gitara and Thogoto in Kiambu County, before joining the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
Southern Bypass was launched to reduce congestion in Nairobi by providing alternative routes for motorists going to the western part of the country.
