Nairobi MCAs have refused reports that they are planning to impeach Governor Mike Sonko.

On Thursday, Jubilee Vice Chairman David Murathe said Sonko had failed and that Jubilee Party was planning to impeach him.

But at a press conference on Friday, ward representatives led by Majority Leader Abdi Guyo and Majority Chief Whip Mwaura Chege dismissed the claims as baseless, uncalled-for rumours.

"The spokesman of our party is President Uhuru Kenyatta. He is the only person allowed to speak on behalf of the party. Any other person is a busybody," said Guyo.

Chege said: "We have no intention, no motivation and no plan whatsoever to impeach the Governor."

The MCAs, however, maintained their stand on the nomination of Miguna Miguna as the Deputy Governor and said they will not approve him.

They also urged national government officials to allow Sonko to settle in his office.

"We ask the government to allow Sonko to do his work. He inherited a county that had been run down for over 30 years. There was no way he could fix it in eight months," said Guyo.

Uhuru has told government officials dealing with Miguna to enforce the law while respecting the courts, effectively leaving his fate in their hands.

The nomination has exposed the vicious battle over 2022 succession in the ruling coalition.

Sonko’s unexpected choice of Miguna, a man twice deported by his bosses, was the clearest indication of the bitter split in Uhuru’s party.

The county boss says he respects the President and that he simply wants a DG who will help him fight the cartels choking Nairobi.

Details:

The impeachment subject came up after the Governor nominated the lawyer and NRMKe General in an unanticipated move.

People such as political analyst Mutahi Ngunya are of the view that Miguna should take the job and then question Sonko's integrity over Nairobi's many problems.
