Elected leaders in Uasin Gishu county are scheduled to hold a crisis meeting to discuss the state of education standards in the county.

This follows an assessment report by the County Director of Education showing that 318 candidates scored E in last year’s KCSE exams.

The crisis meeting will be attended by Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, Phylis Bartoo (Moiben), Julius Ruto (Kesses), Samuel Chepkonga (Ainabkoi), David Kiplagat (Soy), JanetSitienei (Turbo), Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago and Woman Representative Gladys Boss Shollei.

Governor Jonathan Bii said the meeting is expected to explore causes of the poor results in last year’s KCSE and come up with measures to reverse the trend.

The leaders expressed concern that majority of the candidates, who sat for KCSE last year failed and cannot proceed to universities or secure good jobs.

“It is embarrassing to note that despite producing Kenya's fifth President William Ruto, we produced many Es in last year’s exams,” Bii said.

Bartoo said academic standards in secondary are falling and elected leaders have an obligation to address the trend.

“It is a shame that the President’s county produced such a large number of Es and that is why we have called for an urgent meeting to discuss the matter,” she said.

MP Ruto described the trend as disturbing.

The leaders spoke yesterday during the disbursement of bursaries for Kapseret constituency.

School principals, board chairmen, parents' representatives, educationists and Uasin Gishu Knut and Kuppet officials.

In January, angry parents of St Martin Mafuta Secondary School in Soy constituency chased away the school principal and teachers over poor KCSE results.

The school recorded a mean grade of E with the top student scoring a D+.

The Teachers Service Commission moved with speed and transferred six teachers, saying their presence at the institution was a danger to their well-being.
