Two children drown while swimming in Machakos quarry

Two children have died after they drowned while swimming in a quarry in Machakos County.

The duo, both boys aged 10 and 13, died during the swimming spree at Kathaana village in Kangundo sub-county on Thursday.

Area sub-county police commander Zechariah Bitok said the incident happened on Thursday evening.

"There are two children who have drowned at Kathaana, in the quarries, I think they were trying to swim or something like that. They are aged 13 years and 10 years," said Bitok said.

Bitok warned parents against allowing their children to swim in quarries.

"Let no parent allow his/her child to swim in quarries. After rains, they get filled with storm waters thereby becoming a health hazard," the police boss said.

Bitok said he will be sensitize the community living in such areas about the issue.

The bodies were removed to Kangundo Level 4 hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting postmortem.

Bitok said they had launched investigations into the incident.
