Zetech Sparks' head coach, Benard Kitolo, has voiced his frustration with the state of officiating in the Women's Premier League (WPL) as his team fights to avoid relegation.
The team currently sit eighth in the 12-team standing with 15 points, recording nine losses, four wins and three draws.
Kitolo highlighted instances, where his team was denied penalties despite deserving claims, contributing to their tough battle for survival.
“The league has been a tough one, thanks to officiating. The clips circulating social media show it all. I got three penalties in the last match and none was given to me, " he said.
Zetech suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ulinzi Starlets in their recent league encounter at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday.
Calls from fans and the technical bench for spot kicks went unanswered in three different instances, fueling Kitolo's anger at the match officials.
Reflecting on the competitive landscape of the WPL, Kitolo stressed the importance of thorough preparation, both mentally and tactically, to avoid relegation.
"I always motivate my players to have mental resilience, owing to the tough nature of the league," he stated.
The tactician stressed the significance of midfield dominance, underlining the team's focus and strategic approach to securing victories in the upcoming matches.
"In football, the team that dominates the midfield wins the game. We will go into every remaining match strategically ready," he added.
Kitolo confirmed the absence of second-choice goalkeeper Consolata Ndung'u due to injury but expressed confidence in the depth of his squad.
Their next assignment is an FKF Cup semifinal match against Kibera Soccer Ladies on Saturday.
Kitolo warned his charges not to underestimate their opponent, especially since they are a top-five team in the league.
"The girls should not underestimate the opponent. Kibera are a tough team and sit fourth in the log," Kitolo stated. Kibera are currently fourth in the league standings with 27 points.
Should Zetech advance, they will face either Ulinzi Starlets or Kenya Police Bullets in the cup finals slated for June 1.
