FAKE FERTILISER

Impeachment motion against CS Linturi welcome

The fertiliser scandal is a mockery of the President’s agenda to uplift those at the bottom.

In Summary
  • Fertiliser subsidy was one of the flagship projects of President Ruto meant to help the country attain food security.
  • However, in the wake of allegations of fake fertilisers flooding the market, it is only prudent for Linturi to take responsibility and resign.

MPs will today cast their vote to approve Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi’s impeachment motion, paving the way for the creation of a select committee to investigate him.

The development is career threatening to Linturi’s tenure in the Cabinet as the motion is said to enjoy support from the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition.

This is demonstrated by the fact that several MPs from President William Ruto's UDA and affiliate parties support the motion. At least one-third of the 349 members will have to vote in favour of the motion for it to move to the next level. That translates to 116 members.

Failure to raise the number will mean the motion dying a natural death.

Fertiliser subsidy was one of the flagship projects of President Ruto meant to help the country attain food security. However, in the wake of allegations of fake fertilisers flooding the market, it is only prudent for Linturi to take responsibility and resign.

The CS has monumentally failed farmers countrywide. The fertiliser scandal is a mockery of the President’s agenda to uplift those at the bottom, especially small-scale farmers who now stare at post-harvest losses.

Hustlers, therefore, expect the government to take stern action against other state officials involved in this embarrassing scandal that puts Kenya’s food security at stake.
