Asumwa lands tennis scholarship to study in United States

The duo getting scholarships to the United States of America is big boost for tennis in the country as Tennis Kenya marks its centennial year

Tennis star Rosehilda Asumwa has received a university scholarship and will join Cowley College in Kansas, USA in January.

Speaking Thursday, Asumwa's manager Allan Atola said in the offer, Asumwa will receive a 70 percent scholarship deal that will cater for her tuition fees, books, tennis equipment and insurance in the USA.

The offer, he said will be upgraded to a full scholarship if she makes it to the team’s top four spots.

Asumwa will be following in the footsteps of her sibling and  Wimbledon double junior champion Angela Okutoyi who will be joining Auburn University in the new year.

Atola said they are working on paperwork and are hopeful by mid-January she will have left the country. "We are working on the paperwork to ensure everything is ready by the new year to travel," added Atola. 

Atola said Asumwa will study business management and play tennis.

"She is extremely happy with the move and very delighted to join her sister in the USA. The opportunities in the USA are immense and she will be able to study and at the same follow her passion for tennis,” added Atola. 

Asumwa and Okutoyi recently faced off in the Rwanda Open in Kigali with Okutoyi winning 6-2, 6-1. The two teamed up to win the doubles category, beating Shana Martin Mao and Esther Angeleno of Tanzania 6-1, 6-0. 

Asumwa was delighted with the win in the doubles category, saying: “It's a great honour to play with my sister in the doubles category and hopefully in the future, I can win against her in the singles category and do the country proud,” added Asumwa.
