21 nations expected for Women's World Tennis Tour at Karen

Twenty-one countries will grace the Women's World Tennis Tour tournament slated for this weekend at the Karen Country Club.

Hosts Kenya, USA, India, Switzerland, Germany, France, Serbia, Croatia, Denmark, Italy and Israel have so far confirmed their participation.

Other countries including Algeria, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, North Macedonia, and Uzbekistan have committed to featuring in the two-week championships.

A total of 45 players and 10 coaches will be attending the championship, according to the organisers.

Team Kenya will be represented by Wimbledon Double junior champion Angela Okutoyi, sibling Rosehilda Asumwa, Cynthia Wanjala, Mary Wachira, Katarina Karanja, Monica Kahura, and Claire Muthoni.

Highly-ranked players on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings coming to Nairobi includes Germans Luisa Meyer Auf der Heide (392), Emily Seibold (518), Jasmin Jebawy (587) and Chantal Sauvant (602) plus India's Sowjanya Bavisetti (512) and Serbian Tamara Curovic (576).

Play will start at the Karen Club with the qualifiers on Sunday and the main draw will start on Tuesday. Prize money for the event will be Sh1.8 million.

The winner in the singles category will pocket Sh285,532 while the doubles champions will take home Sh115,984.

Tennis Kenya administrator Nancy Nduku said preparations for the event are almost complete and urged Kenyans to turn up in large numbers. "We are asking Kenyans to turn up in large numbers for the event," she said. 

TK secretary general, Wanjiku Mbugua Karani, wants the event to be held on a yearly basis.

"We hope the event can be held year it will be a good opportunity  to showcase our talent and as well as host the best players in the world,” added Mbugua
