Okutoyi to join Auburn University next year on full scholarship

It's a four-year scholarship for the country's youngest Kenya Open champion.

Wimbledon junior champion Angela Okutoyi will join Auburn University next year for her tennis and education scholarship.

Speaking on her social media account, the teen sensation is delighted to join the institution.

“Super-excited to announce that I will be continuing my tennis career and education at Auburn University! Thanks to my family, coaches, friends and everyone who helped me along the way!” said the 2018 Kenya Open champion.

It's a four-year scholarship for the country's youngest Kenya Open champion.

Following the United States junior Open last month, Okutoyi received 30 scholarships and visited Auburn University, University of California Berkeley, University of Central Florida and North Carolina State University alongside Tennis Kenya secretary general, Wanjiru Mbugua Karani. 

On why she chose Auburn University,  Okutoyi said: “ I loved the environment, the coaches, the spirit and all-round facilities at the place and I can't wait to get started.”

She added that the United States has the best University for Sports. "The USA offers you a chance to play and enhance your academics. So this is a wonderful opportunity and I don't think there are countries in the world that have these kinds of opportunities," said Okutoyi. 

Okutoyi will pursue a degree course in Business Management. Auburn University has 24,000 undergraduate students on full scholarships.

It is the second largest university in Alabama after the University of Alabama. Notable sports personalities from Auburn university include NBA star Charles Barkley, National Football League star Cam Newton and US music legend Lionel Richie.

Okutoyi is the first Kenyan to compete in all four prestigious junior Grand Slam tournaments. She has played in the Australian Open,  French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open this year.

She is expected to compete in two women's tournaments— the W15 Monastir in Tunisia from October 17-23 and W15 Nairobi from November 14-20 at Karen Country Club in Nairobi before flying out to the USA in the new year.
