Kenya Harlequins coach Paul Murunga has set his sights on winning two legs of the National Sevens circuit starting later this month in Eldoret.
Murunga said he believes they have what it takes to go on a good run in the six-leg circuit, especially with the talent and the form at his disposal.
“ The boys have been hard at work in training and our goal this year is to win two tournaments and be competitive in every leg of the circuit,” added Murunga.
Last season, the Ngong Road outfit finished with 53 points to place seventh overall and the tactician wants them to improve their points haul. "I want us to do even better and aim for 100 or more points from this year's campaign,” added Murunga.
Murunga believes the arrival of Dave Mwaura, Richel Wangila and Lucky Dewald will play a pivotal role for the team in the series.
“ The three players have the experience of playing on the circuit and our form at the 15s front has been exceptional. We are looking forward to it,” noted Murunga.
He confirmed they will not be playing in the upcoming Embu Sevens tournament as they focus on the conditioning of the squad for the Sevens Series.
“ This will be a tough Sevens circuit if you look at the scheduling. We play Eldoret first, then Kisumu and Mombasa all in a span of three consecutive weeks. So if you factor in the travel, rest, and recovery, it will be challenging for the teams.”
Murunga said he expects stiff competition from the likes of defending champions Menengai Oilers, KCB, Kabras, and Strathmore.
"The four teams are going to be our biggest competitors. Last year, we saw a very competitive circuit with one team winning a tournament apiece. So it's going to be wide open,” observed Murunga
The national Sevens circuit will start in Eldoret on June 23-25 and will be followed a week later by the Dala Sevens on July 1-2. A week later, the tournament will mark the halfway stage with the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa.
The circuit will then take a break for a month to allow the Kenya Rugby Union to host the Junior World Trophy Tour from July 15-30 at Nyayo Stadium.
The series resumes on August 5-6 with the Prinsloo Sevens followed by the Christies Seven (Aug 12-13) and Kabeberi Sevens (August 19-20) wrapping up the series.
