Uganda are the latest team to confirm participation for next weekend's Safari Sevens tournament Nyayo Stadium.

The Lady Cranes will join Zimbabwe, South Africa and Kenya, who will field two teams in the event.

Kenya Rugby Union chairman Oduor Gangla said the two-day rugby extravaganza will have 12 teams split into pools of three.

"We are expecting a competitive tournament now that we have the 12 sides confirmed for the men's competition and five for the women,” added Gangla.

The women's event will be played in a round-robin format.

The tournament draw will take place next week with Kenya fielding by defending champions Morans, Shujaa, KCB and the national Under 20 team 'Chipu' in the men's category.

International sides are expected to arrive on Thursday next week.

Gangla added: “We are talking with the government to see if we can have fans allowed back to the stadium."

Plans are underway to have an age-grade competition featuring a few teams and details on that will be released next week by the event organisers.

Shujaa resumed training last week and head coach Innocent Simiyu said the event will be a big boost for the team's preparations for the start of the World Sevens Series in Dubai in a month's time.

The tournament was canceled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
