Kenya Sevens head coach Innocent Simiyu believes the side can execute better results in future tournaments after finishing third at the Edmonton Sevens on Sunday.

The former skipper says there is room for improvement in various facets of play, including kickoff, reception, defence and one-on-one tackling.

"It's been exciting and brutal two weeks. The boys have been exceptional but we can improve. We have started on a journey and we will be better," said Simiyu.

He said competition for places in the squad will be intense going forward. "We have a deep squad and when we resume training next week, it's going to be quite competitive, and picking the next squad of 12 won't be easy.

He lauded the composure of rookies Levi Amunga, Alvin Marube and Timothy Mmatsi for the two tournaments.

"They have done well for their first tournament, excelling in their core roles. This demonstrates the depth that we have in the programme," noted Simiyu.

Shujaa bagged the bronze medal after beating hosts Canada 33-14 in the third-place playoff. Skipper Nelson Oyoo opened the scoring, with Amunga converting for a 7-0 lead.

On resumption Willy Ambaka dotted down to extend Kenya's lead with Amunga slotting home the conversion for 21-7 lead. Otieno scored his second try which went unconverted before Jake Thiel pounced on an error by Harold Anduvate to reduce the margin to 28-14. Billy Odhiambo then sealed the win with a well taken try to complete the rout.
