The 97th edition of the annual Tannahill golf tournament will for the first time in history feature a senior category with players over 55 years gracing the prestigious Easter extravaganza.
The seniors’ trophy will be played on the morning of Good Friday before paving way for action proper in the afternoon.
The event is scheduled to take place at the Royal Nairobi Club from April 15-17 and will feature the hosts, Mombasa, Muthaiga, Western Kenya, Limuru Club, Vet Lab, Kenya Railway, Sigona, and Karen.
This year the tournament is being sponsored by Jamii Telecom to a tune of Sh1.5million and will be supported by Chipper Cash, Merican Solutions, Rentco Group, First Assurance, CPF, Crown Paints, and Safaricom.
Jamii Telecom marketing manager Ebby Samoi said they’re proud to be associated with the longest-running tournament in Kenya, which is considered one of the largest amateur golf events in sub-Saharan Africa.
This year’s event will bring together the best amateur players from nine golf clubs from Nairobi, Mombasa, and the Western region, who will compete for the coveted Tannahill Shield.
Royal Nairobi Golf Club captain Stanley Kirui thanked Jamii for the support. “Unlike other golf events, the Tannahill tournament is played by teams, who are interested in their golf skills and keen to demonstrate team spirit, while enjoying the company of the other competitive golfer,” Kirui said.
Kirui also said that they are in touch with all the participating teams and they are all excited and working hard so that they can perform in the prestigious event.
The activities ahead of the main tournament on Easter Sunday, April 17th will be the Junior Easter tournament, which will feature Juniors from clubs all over Kenya. Seven teams have confirmed participation for the junior tournament.
The Tannahill Tournament is the brainchild of Major Arthur Tannahill and was inaugurated as an annual event in 1924.
