Western team hope to improve on their second finish during the 2019 Tannahill Shield golf tournament as this year’s edition tees off Friday at the Nairobi Royal.
Following the cancellation of the 2020 event, Western team captain Kimeli Mutai is confident they will post better performance this time round after losing to hosts Royal by a point in the 2019 edition.
According to the programme, the tournament will tee off on Friday morning in the first round followed by Saturday evening for the second round. Tannahill, which is one of the oldest golf tournaments in the country, conclude on Sunday morning.
Mutai, who serves as the Nandi Bears Golf Club chairman, said they have three entrants in the team who will push them to the top of the table in the match-play championships.
“We have a very vibrant team and we are preparing well for the tournament. Finishing second in 2019 was not easy and this time but we now want the title,” said Mutai.
The team, which started their training at Nakuru Club, have lately been training at the host venue at Royal Club. He said despite losing to Royal Nairobi in the last edition, they still displayed great team-work.
Mutai leads the Western team that consists of Aron Kitur (Eldoret), Robert Nyanjoka (Nandi Bears), Victor Maiyo (Kericho), Geoffrey Kariuki (Kisii), Peter Rimui (Nanyuki), Elli Barno (Nandi Bears), Nelson Koech (Nandi Bears), Luther Kamau (Nakuru) and John Kamais (Nakuru).
The new entrants Kariuki and Kamau have recently posted good performance in the ongoing Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series and they are expected to provide the much needed impetus to the team.
“Kamau is the Nakuru captain and has been doing well while Koech was placed eighth at the just concluded Match-play championships,” concluded Mutai.
