Gideon's Starlets coach Peter Ademba wants Homa Bay County governor-elect Gladys Wanga to revive the sports sector in the county through financial grants.

Ademba said this will help teams from the region realise their ambitions of playing in the Women's Premier League. Gideon's lost 2-1 to Moving The Goalpost in the Women's Premier League promotion playoffs in July — with Kibera Soccer and Kitale-based Royal Starlets bagging the automatic slots.

"Our biggest undoing is lack of finances. If we had funds, running the team would be easier and players would deliver without straining too much," Ademba said.

"The previous leadership failed to deliver on their promises and that is partly the reason why we lost at the ultimate stage, considering the logistical troubles we've experienced. Our dreams of 'dining with the big girls' went up in smoke but all is not lost."

Gideon's would have been the second team from Homabay to play in the top tier after SEP Oyugis. Sep got relegated to Division One in the 2020/21 season with Kisumu All Starlets the only WPL team in the entire Nyanza region.

"We want to discuss with Hon Wanga openly and lay bare our proposals. We are lagging behind in matters of sports. We will also engage our friends and well-wishers to offer a helping hand to the team," he said.

"We failed in our first-ever attempt but we want to make amends in the second round. We have a quality squad and we won't release our best players. However, we would like to sign another five players to enhance competition and boost our bench-power to boost our chances of booking an automatic slot."

The Division One league is set to resume next month but dates are yet to be revealed.
