Gaspo women's team manager Edward Githua has dismissed talk of title contention in the wake of impressive back-to-back wins over Kisumu All-Starlets and Kayole.

The Gatundu-based side thumped Kisumu 6-0 last week before demolishing Kayole 5-0 on Sunday to ascend to the summit of the Kenya Women's Premier League standings.

"It's good to start the season well. Scoring 11 and conceding none is a sign of progress but the players cannot let that get into their heads. No team has won a title after winning two matches. I believe in one game at a time," said Githua.

"We haven't conceded but the team did not have a thorough preseason and there's a long way to go. Matches against Nakuru, Ulinzi, Vihiga, Thika, and Zetech will be a real test for us if we have to go all the way.

"Anything is possible in football. Who expected defending champions Thika Queens to lose against Bunyore Starlets?"

Githua has struggled to find a suitable replacement for midfielder Sheril Angachi who joined rivals Ulinzi Starlets despite having several options in Corazon Aquino, Diana Wacera, Winnie Mugeshi, Stellah Anyango, and Sharon Kumoru.

"The midfield has not recuperated after Angachi left. We lack a midfield controller who dictates proceedings but we must fix that."

Githua reckons the addition of striker Bertha Omita has solved the goal-scoring problems that derailed their title ambitions in the two preceding seasons. Omita's lethal partnership with Mercy Airo and Elizabeth Wambui upfront has seen her score four goals thus far.

Elsewhere, Bunyore Starlets head coach Daniel Arunga said their shock 2-1 win over Thika Queens at Mumboha Stadium on Tuesday has put them on course for more positive results.

He, however, cautioned his charges against resting on their laurels.

“We should not be carried away by that win because we are facing Nakuru in our next match at Mumboha grounds, so we need to prepare well,” Arunga said.

Arunga said Bunyore Starlets crashed 5-0 to Wadadia in their opening match due to stage fright.
