Kenya’s losing streak at the ongoing World Boxing Championships continued as light-middleweight Boniface Mugunde lost to Albanian Beqiri Alban.

Mugunde’s defeat meant that Hit Squad have now lost all their five bouts after David Karanja, Joshua Wasike, George Cosby and Victor Odhiambo all fell in the preliminary round on Tuesday.

Wasike lost his heavyweight preliminary bout on unanimous points decision against Uzadzislau Smiahlikau of Belarus in the night fight while Cosby was also unanimously beaten by Belgian El Mohor Ziad.

But amidst the disappointing start, Hit squad head coach Benjamin Musa remains confident that the Kenyan boxers might pull off some pleasant surprises in the remaining bouts.

"It is expected that anytime you come up against the best boxers in the world the going will always prove tough. However, we are not badly off. We prepared well for the championships and I still have faith we will soon start registering some positive results," said Musa.

Meanwhile, all boxers angling for a slot in the Kenya national boxing team also known as Hit Squad, that will represent the country in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England next year must take part in Jamal Cup.

Boxing Federation Kenya (BFK) secretary David Munuhe, said this in a communication to all amateur boxing administrators in the country.

“All elite boxers willing to participate in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham must participate in this tournament (Jamal Cup),” read the BFK statement.

Munuhe added: “Jamal Cup will also be used to select women elite boxers to represent Kenya in the upcoming 2021 Women World Boxing Championship in Instanbul.”

The tournament will be held at the Nyayo Stadium gymnasium from November 17-20.
