KPA end regular season with maximum points

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) blanked University of Nairobi Dynamites 53-33 in a women’s Premier League clash at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

The win saw the ports women consolidate their top spot in the table with 31 points from 16 matches.

It was the last regular season fixture for KPA, who had whacked Strathmore University Swords 76-30 the previous day.

KPA led 12-10 and 17-8 in the first two quarters before trailing 12-11 in the third and finally rampaging to a 13-3 cushion in the last stanza.

Vilma Owino, who hit KPA’s opener wound up with 14 while Alisha Ellora replied with nine for the campus girls.

“We did not play well. Maybe they underrated the opponents but all in all, we won and got the much-needed points,” said KPA coach Anthony Ojukwu.

Betty Kananu and Samba Mjomba impressed as reigning champions Equity Bank broke away late to beat Storms 45-37.

Both teams were deadlocked 33-33 in the third quarter before a three-pointer by Kananu and a basket by Mjomba galvanised a 41-37 cushion.

Kananu led the bankers with game-high 28 points while Jemimah Omondi replied with 17 for the losers.

Meanwhile, Strathmore University Blades cut visiting Lakeside 71-66 behind 10 points from Robert Odhiambo in a men’s encounter.

However, the Kisumu side, who had 13 from Sola Awuor, returned with three points after squeezing out a narrow 46-43 victory over Umoja.

“I am taking one game at a time. I am happy with the result but not at the way played in the last quarter,” said ‘Strath’ coach Tony Ochieng.

In other matches, KPA men blanked University of Nairobi Terrorists 66-40, Emyba lost 88-61 to Thunder as Kenyatta University Pirates stopped Eldonets 72-52 at home.
