Opicho, Celia in as final Lionesses squad is unveiled

Strathmore University forward Ivy Opicho has been included in the Kenya Lionesses final team to the FIBA Afrobasket Women Championships in Cameroon.

Opicho fills the void left by USA-based Felmas Koranga, who was unable to travel due to academic engagements.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) shooting guard Selina Okumu, who missed the qualifiers in Kigali last time out to concentrate on her studies, replaces her sister Celia Okumu.

The team departs on Wednesday for Yaounde ahead of the September 18-28 continental tournament.

Also in the squad are captain Rose Ouma, Victoria Reynolds, Natalie Akinyi, Melissa Akinyi, Jemimah Night, Georgia Adhiambo, Mercy Wanyama, Brenda Wasuda, Vilma Owino and Christine Akinyi.

Joseph Amoko is the head the delegation while George Mayienga is the head coach assisted by Mike Opel.

Meanwhile, Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) fixtures secretary Joseph Amoko is worried that this season’s matches will spill over to next year due to the numerous stoppages.

“It will difficult to end the season this year. I have tried my level best working on the fixtures but there are far too many defferement requests from teams and this has become a big problem,” he lamented.

“I’ve canceled many games from team’s who are not ready to travel due to this or that. How do you play when you are not ready? he posed.

He said there are even team’s which are yet to conclude their first leg games. Bottom-of-the-table Emyba have played only three matches.

In the women’s Premier League,  Kisumu Lakeside have also played three games in the 10-team league.
