Monday was a busy day for Team Kenya at the World Indoor Masters Athletics Championships in Torun, Poland where Kenya won three medals.

Former national 20km race walk champion Erick Shikuku and Kenneth Mburu struck gold medals while two-time Africa Masters champion Regina Mulatya bagged a silver medal.

Shikuku, who initially dominated Kenya race walking championships won the 300m race walk title while Mburu, the late entrant into the championships, was victorious in the 8km cross country (25:32.07).

Mulatya cleared 5.46m to finish second in the 45-year-old category.

Team Kenya head of delegation Rose Tata Muya, a former sprinter, said it was an excellent start for the country, especially now that they were making their debut at the World Indoor Masters champions.

"I am a happy leader and happy for my athletes and my country. Imagine it is our first time participating in an indoor championship which is very tricky in very cold Poland. Winning medals in championships featuring 81 countries is no mean feat," said Tata.

Mulatya, who will be competing in two other events, is hoping to strike a gold medal in either.

"Winning silver was great but I am looking forward to a gold medal in both 60m and triple jump," said Mulatya.

The championships, which started on March 24 will run up to April 1.
