The Kakamega Relays in conjunction with Athletics Kenya Western region will on April 28 host a sprints and field events talent search at the Mumias Sugar Sports Complex.
The local organising committee, led by coordinator Fabian Makani and AK Western region chairman Francis Afundi, said registration for the event is already open and is free of charge across the various age categories.
This will be the first sprints and middle-distance meeting in Western region, where the longest race will be the 1500m event.
"We have the go-ahead from Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei to hold this event in a bid to identify and nurture talent for the future,” said Afundi.
Other events to be featured are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 100m hurdles, 110m/h, 400h, 4x100m relay and 4 x400m relays.
Field events will revolve around shot put, long jump, triple jump and discus among others.
The top three athletes in every event will walk away with Sh3000, Sh2000, and Sh1000 respectively.
Makani said there is great potential in sprints in the region, waiting to be harnessed.
He said the event provides an opportunity for upcoming runners to showcase their talent in their quest to a professional athletics career in the future.
