East Africa gold medalists Beatrice Machoka and Sharon Moraa stole the show during the Kisii county secondary schools athletics championships held at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho.

Machoka won the 400m race while Moraa easily emerged winner in the 200m race during the event which concluded on Saturday.

The students at St Peter’s Keberesi also anchored their teams to victory in the 4x400m and 4x100m relays.

In 400m, Machoka beat compatriot mercy Bosibori ( 57.10 secs) to second place after posting a time of 56.58 seconds.

In 200m, Moraa crossed the finishing line in 12.20 seconds ahead of Damackline Bonareri who timed 12.25.

The duo were gold medalists in recent East Africa Under 18 and under championships and have now set sights on the Confederation of Africa Athletics trials set for Nyayo National Stadium on April 7 and 8.

“We came here to test ourselves ahead of the trials. My target is to represent Kenya at Africa Under 18 championships in Zambia,” said Machoka.

Moraa said: “Yes,  I want to qualify for the CAA under 18. The Dar-es -salaam championship gave us good exposure.”

Dorca Isoe of Keberesi, another probable for the CAA junior event, won the 800m in 2:15.00, beating Agnes Thomas to second place in 2:20.00

In the 1, 500m, Mary Nyaboke emerged winner in 4:40.00 mins ahead of Maurine Cheptoo who finished second in 4:35.00

Keberesi coach Dennis Odongo said: “I didn’t want them to participate in more than two events to avoid burnout and also give other upcoming athletes an opportunity to go to nationals.”

He added that since the CAA Under 18 and Under-20 trials coincide with the regionals, he will take a lean team for the trials.
