Olympic marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir has urged fellow athletes to champion for planting of more trees because it ensures they can train in perfect environmental conditions.
Jepchirchir is the ambassador of the inaugural Kapsowar Charity and Conservation 10km race set for today in Kapsowar, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
She said accepting the role was a no-brainer for her due to the critical place environmental conservation holds in her heart.
“I chose to be the ambassador for this race because as an athlete I know the importance of trees for good weather. We can train well in such an environment and secure good positions,” Jepchirchir said.
The area has been affected by landslides because of lack of trees and the world half marathon champion said planting trees is a matter of urgency to reverse the trend.
Race director Boniface Tiren expressed his delight at working with Jepchirchir , describing her as a role model for aspiring athletes and young girls looking to succeed in their studies.
“Jepchirchir has been doing well in her career as a woman and students chose her to be the race patron due to her resilience as a woman in developing the sport. As organizers and the race being part of the school, we had to abide by the students,” Tiren said.
The 10km main and elite race will start at the Cheptongei and will end at the Moi Girls Kapsowar ground.
The winner will pocket Sh 80,000, whereas the second and third placed will walk away with Sh 50,000 and Sh 30,000 respectively. The first 20 finishers will also be awarded.
The second event is the 5km race meant for students for both boys and girls. The winner will walk home with Sh 20,000 while the second and third placed will earn Sh 15,000 and Sh 10,000 respectively.
Jepchirchir, the two-time world half marathon champion, will be leaving the country on Sunday ahead of the New York City marathon next Wednesday.
