The Nairobi county government and NMS have invited residents of 10 old city estates to discuss how best to proceed with an upgrade of the housing units.
Other stakeholders are free to join the public participation forums to be held over 10 days starting February 8 to 19 from 10am.
Residents from Woodley will convene at Joseph Kangethe Social Hall on February 8; Ziwani at Kariokor Social Hall on February 9; Bahati at Bahati Social Hall on February 10; Maringo and Jericho at Jericho Social Hall on February 11 and 12 respectively.
In Lumumba estate, the forum will be held at Lumumba Social Hall on February 15; Bondeni at Pumwnai Social Hall on February 16; California will use the same venue as Bondeni the following day.
On February 18 to 19 the teams will be in Embakasi and Kariobangi respectively.
In a public notice in a daily newspaper on Wednesday, NMS director-general Mohammed Badi said the forums were a constitutional requirement. He invited both tenants, interested parties and other stakeholders.
The improvement of the old estates is in Phase Two of the Affordable Housing Programme.
City Hall and NMS have also partnered to implement the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan.
The NIUPLAN includes the Eastlands Urban Renewal Plan, the Railway City Plans, urban regeneration and the renewal of the 10 old estates.
On January 8, NMS invited developers to express interest in partnering with it to carry out Phase Two of the Urban Renewal and Housing Programme.
Phase One is on course, with the first block of 160 units at Pangani scheduled to be handed over next month, nine months after the groundbreaking ceremony.
Pangani estate is among seven estates – others being Uhuru Estate, Suna Road, Old Ngara, New Ngara, Jevanjee and Ngong Road I and II – which have been targeted for redevelopment.
The Sh25 billion Pangani development is part of the government's low-cost housing projects.
The eight blocks will have 1,562 units standing on 5.2 acres worth Sh4 billion.
The 48 tenants, who were evicted to pave way for the construction, are to be given first priority when the houses are handed over.
Each tenant will be allocated a new house, each which costs Sh3 million. They are to pay for the houses over a 30-year period at a negotiated monthly rent of Sh8,000.
Tecnofin was the developer awarded for the renewal of Pangani estate and SS Malonza the consultant.
