Team Kenya to the IAAF World Cross country Championships departs tonight for Aarhus, Denmark seeking to extend their dominance in the bi-annual event on Saturday.
Once again all eyes will be on Geoffrey Kamworor, who will be seeking his third title in the men’s 10km after ruling Guiyang 2015 and Kampala 2017. In 2017, Kenya won four individual and one team title in Kampala, Uganda.
Apart from Kamworor, other winners were— Irene Chebet Cheptai (senior women 10km), mixed relay and senior women’s teams. Kenyan cross-country champion Amos Kirui and Ethiopian champion Mogos Tuemay are the other strong challengers.
In the senior women’s race, world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri start favourite and will be up against world 3,000m record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech and Commonwealth 10,000m champion Stella Chesang. Sarah Chelangat, the Youth Olympic champion at 3000m and cross country, is among the favourites for the U20 women’s race alongside compatriot and world U20 5000m champion Beatrice Chebet.
Over 300 athletes (171 men, 139 women) are entered for the individual senior races, while more than 200 (121 men, 111 women) will be in action in the U20 races. Ten teams have been entered for the mixed relay.
