St Peter’s Keberesi’s duo Joel Moturi and Brigit Cheptoo won the 10,000m races during the Nyanza regional secondary schools track and field championships at Homa Bay High School.

Moturi won the men’s race while Cheptoo emerged winner in the women’s category during theraces ran under hot conditions. Moturi clocked 29:04.00 beating Vic Omondi of Ngoto to second place in 53:38.00 while Jackson Tong’I of Mogonga was second in 30:42.07.

“The race was not tough but the weather was very harsh. I want to try and chase a double tomorrow because I qualified in 5, 000m,” said Moturi.

Cheptoo clocked 37:16.00 to beat Mogonga’s Angela Kemuma to second place in 39:47.00 while Lucy Matete posted 41:41.00 to finish third. Francis Charito of Keberesi blew away a strong field to win the boys 3, 000m in 8:21.41 while compatriot Felix Boera was second in 8:43.51.

Hurdler Rukia Nusra easily qualified to the finals winning her heat and qualified to today’s final.

“I have been unwell but I’m happy I qualified to the finals. I want to defend my title,” said Nusra who represented Kenya at the World Under 18 championships in Nairobi.

Junior international Peninah Akoth successfully defended the shot put title with a throw of 10.92 and was followed by Lencer Anyango was second (9.86m). Another junior international Joseph Nyakundi of Mogonga won discuss title with a throw of 36.32, beating Dennis Apindi to second place. He had a throw of 33.44.

Allan Anyona of Omwari won high jump title with a jump of 1.83m and was followed in second place by Amos Nyakundi of Nyangoge who had a jump of 1.80m.

In the absence of defending champion Dominic Ndigiti, the 10, 000m walk title went to Keyborn Obato who clocked 21:04.00 while Vic Omondi was second in 53:38.00 and Ndigiti’s training Camum Mecha third in 54:31.00.
