Eldoret City marathon increases prize money, changes route Eldoret City Marathon organisers have increased prize money as well as changed the route ahead of the April 21 event in Eldoret.

Speaking during the launch of the second edition of Eldoret yesterday morning, race director Moses Tanui, said they have increased prize money to attract international athletes. The two-time Boston marathon champion said this time around, the winner of the race will pocket US$35,000 (Sh3.5 million), up from last year’s Sh3 million. He said besides the winner, the top 10 finishers will also get cash rewards.

“Athletes are the backbone of this nation and we have to treat them well. This race is meant to benefit athletes and not individuals. That is why we have managed to increase the prize money to attract international runners to compete in it,” said Tanui. He said they have decided to increase the prize money owing to many sponsors, who have come on board following good organization.

“Our operations are above board and whatever we do is an open book for all to see and that is why we have attracted more sponsors. “In fact, the more the sponsors come, the more we will continue increasing the prize money,” said the former Olympic Games 10,000m silver medallist.

He explained that they have been forced to change the route to concentrate the event within the town, owing to the improved road network.

“Due to the expansion of roads within Eldoret, we have more options to compete within town without interfering much with the traffic. Initially, we could not compete more in town because of blocking the main highway,” said Tanui. The race will be flagged off at the University of Eldoret and end at the Zion Mall within the town.

At the same time, Tanui warned athletes that Eldoret City Marathon dubbed ‘Running for a course of Climate Change’ is meant for clean runners, not dopers.

“I want to warn those athletes with the intention of doping not try the Eldoret Marathon. I ran as a clean athlete and I would tolerate those who want to make a kill through a shortcut,” added the former Vienna Marathon winner.

Registration fee is Sh1,200 and runners can enrol themselves online on www.eldoretcitymarathon.com or Pay Bill number 531916.
