Nairobi Chess Club, Black Knights, and Jomo Kenyatta University Club are causing ripples in chess circles after ruling the Kenya National Chess League over the weekend.

Nairobi, who are yet to drop a match, shook off a tough challenge from Lighthouse Alpha in an intense battle that saw them tie 2.5-2.5.

“The battles on the boards were intense and we witnessed some remarkable performances from both teams,” said the chief arbiter Antony Kionga. The draw highlighted the competitive nature of the league and the immense talent within the chess circles

“The unbeaten records of Black Knights, Nairobi and Jomo Kenyatta demonstrate their strengths and determination.

The high-quality chess displayed by the teams mirrors the competitive nature of the league in the remaining 13 rounds,” Kionga added.

Black Knights Rapid Master Peter Thairu attributed his team’s success to their ambition towards the end goal.

“Our ambition is to finish top of the table and qualify for the Super League while improving our ratings as a team. This will strengthen our team and help us grow together. We also aim to add on our individual Fide ratings.”

According to the standings, KCB holds the top spot alongside Nakuru with nine points apiece despite the defeat. Nairobi trail in second place with eight points. The bankers lost 3.5-1.5 to Nairobi chess over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Equity who are the 2018 champions tied Anchor Chess Club 2.5-2.5 during their match.
